Week of 8/24-28
Math: This week we are using multiplication to find the area of a space. We will be relating area to multiplication and addition and by the end of the week, we will be solving problems about area and finding the area of combined rectangles. I have posted a Khan Academy video on the Family Resources page of the Painter People Outpost website that gives some examples of how area relates to multiplication.
Math Facts: Quiz will be on Friday. Every has been given a copy of the facts they should be working on during the week. They also have copies in their math folders that they practice during class. The goal is to master their x10 facts by the end of the year.
Social Studies: This week for social studies, we're reviewing maps and globes then working to identify types of landforms and bodies of water. I have included some videos in the Family Resources section of my website. We will have a map quiz on their new Continents and Oceans map on Friday.
ELA: We are starting Module 1, Unit 2. The book we will be using for our research over the next several days is My Librarian is a Camel. I have posted a link to a copy of the book on our class website, www.painterpeopleoutpost.org. We will start off focusing on Kenya, taking notes, and identifying the main idea and supporting details of this section of the text. We will also be working together to write an informational paragraph about Kenya, followed by a shared writing about Pakistan. Next week, the students will be assigned a country (either Finland, Thailand, or Zimbabwe) and use what they've learned to construct their own paragraphs. I will post a link in the Explorer Toolbox section of the website if you are interested in taking a look at how their writing will be graded.
DID YOU KNOW? There is a real-life elephant sanctuary located in rural Tennessee. The town of Hohenwald is home to a massive 2,700-acre retirement home for elephants that used to perform in circuses or live in zoos.
Week of 8/17-21
ELA: On Monday, we discussed the book Rain School and planned a paragraph together to describe how the main character, Thomas, overcame his challenge of not having a place to learn. Tuesday and Wednesday, we will be reading a new book, How I Learned Geography, focusing on strategies for figuring out the meaning of unknown works and looking closely at the central message/lesson/moral that the author is trying to convey in the story. We will also be learning how the character's feelings and actions contribute to the sequence of events in the story. Thursday, we will do another paragraph describing how the main character overcame his challenges. Friday, we will do a review and Monday, the students will complete an assessment for Module 1.
Math: We are completing module 1 this week. We will be completing a study guide together in class on Tuesday and do our test on multiplication strategies on Wednesday. We will also have a math facts quiz on Friday. Copies of the next round of facts were sent Friday with those who passed their addition facts. These math facts quizzes will count for a grade beginning this week.
Social Studies/Science: This week, we're starting our science unit about Properties of Matter. Today we conducted an experiment to see which material absorbed water faster, soil, grass, or concrete. We are exploring the physical properties that describe solids, liquids, and gases. We will do a study guide together on Thursday and have a Lesson Check Friday. Our map this week is of the 7 continents. Quiz Friday.
Week of 8/10-14
Welcome back, explorers, to our first full week of 3rd Grade! Here is an overview of our week.
General Info:
There is a copy of our updated daily schedule in everyone's purple folder today. This has also been updated on the Explorers Toolbox page.
There is also a copy of this week's math facts to practice as well as a "dry erase map" to practice in preparation for our quiz Friday. More info below.
Math: We are jumping into multiplication with both feet. This week we will working to count equal groups, relate addition to multiplication, represent multiplication with arrays and number lines, and understand the commutative property of multiplication.
ELA: We will be working to build stamina with our independent reading. We are also launching our first module, "Overcoming Learning Challenges Near and Far." Students will be looking at resources including books, photos, and videos to learn more about how people in hard to reach places on Earth are able to access books and learning. Our two books we will be reading are Waiting for the Biblioburro and Rain School. Our classroom read aloud is The Wild Robot.
Social Studies: This week, we are learning all about maps and globes. We will be taking a look at the different features of these tools and practice using them to locate things on a map.
One of our weekly activities for social studies will be our "dry erase maps." Students will practice labeling a map during the week and have a quiz on Friday. There is a copy in their purple folders to practice on at home. They will be expected to write neatly and spell correctly since there will be a word bank available. A copy of the this map is available in Explorer Toolbox.
